Sweden Day in Jelgava

On 17th of March, the Chamber had the honor to join an official visit to Jelgava within the framework of Sweden Day. The Sweden Day in Jelgava was organized by the Swedish Embassy to Riga in cooperation with Business Sweden, SCC in Latvia and the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga to promote Sweden and introduce Swedish values.

During the visit, the delegation had meetings with the Mayor of Jelgava, Mr. A. Rāviņš and the rector of Latvian University of Agriculture. The delegation also paid visits to the Swedish companies SIP Home and Euromaint Rail, the Vet Clinic and the combined heat and power plant Fortum Jelgava. In addition, a number of public events took place as well. The ambassador, Mr. Henrik Landerholm gave a lecture on equality at the Latvian University of Agriculture; Mr. Henrik Landerholm also opened exhibition Life Puzzle, exhibition Facing the Climate, exhibition Sweden from a Bird’s Eye View, and Swedish Film Festival in Jelgava.

According to Jelgava’s City Council, Jelgava is the fourth largest city in Latvia with the population of 60,000. 64.4% of its inhabitants are of working age, and its unemployment (7.1%) is the 3rd lowest in Latvia. Latvia University of Agriculture consists of 8 faculties and has about 4,600 students. Its Veterinary Medicine Faculty is the only one in Latvia that provides veterinary education.
