Bilateral relations & NATO

Bilateral relations & NATO

For the first time in several centuries, a large force of Swedish troops has arrived in Latvia.

On December 12, the Swedish Parliament supported a proposal to participate in the NATO multinational brigade in Latvia in the long term with one mechanized infantry battalion, in which up to 600 soldiers will perform their duties.

It is the first time Sweden has deployed its soldiers to another NATO member state since joining the alliance on March 7, 2024.

The multinational brigade in Latvia currently brings together forces from 13 NATO member states – Albania, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Canada, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

In February, Sweden formally joins the
????????-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia, as part of the ????????-led Multinational Division North.
Sweden will send a Medium Infantry Battalion consisting of soldiers from the South Skåne Regiment (Södra skånska regementet P 7). The Battalion has been preparing for the mission in Latvia for many months and is ready and committed to contribute to NATO:s collective deterrence and defence as part of a multinational team of NATO:s Forward Land Forces in Latvia.
For Sweden, this is a historic event, and the fact that Sweden has chosen Latvia for our biggest NATO mission since joining the Alliance is a testament to our close bilateral relations.
